Having had the most awesome ski experience at Kirkwood near Lake Tahoe many years ago, totally spurred my husband and I on to taking advantage of our own winter wonderland, right on our own doorstep, so to speak. We were very naive when it came to choosing a suitable ski resort because we had never been to the Snowy Mountains to ski. We visited there in the summer many years ago, but not with skiing in mind. So this was a new ski madness challenge-and we were ready.
First we ascertained how many ski resorts there were in the Snowy Mountains area. Being first-time skiers we wanted a family-friendly resort, gentle slopes (for the learner) and progressively harder runs when we became more experienced. After checking out the options, we settled on Mt Selwyn. Our skiing experience has proved that the rave reviews we read early in our search for a resort, to be totally real, and we have not been disappointed. You can ski on this mountain, make all the mistakes you like, and nobody cares! Everyone has to learn sometime! My husband and I are now seventy, still have our occasional spills, but each year we go back for more! And guess what? Once you are over sixty five your costs are minimal! Oh, I forgot to tell you, Selwyn’s rates are the cheapest! That’s a bonus when you have a large family.
Not only is Mt Selwyn an excellent place to begin your skiing experience, but it is totally carefree. Even the smallest children enjoy the slopes and being taught to ski. It’s actually quite cute to be riding up on the chair lift and see these tiny children go scooting down the mountain, helmet on, arms stretched for balance, and enjoying the exhilarating ride. Last year our youngest grandchild skied for the first time. He was awesome. And he was just two years of age. He loved it. His sister, who was four, was not sure she wanted to try, but after seeing her little brother, decided to give ski madness a go! Coming back up on the chair lift she said, “Grandma, I didn’t think skiing would be so much fun.” No wonder they will be back at the Selwyn resort this year!
For the first three years we rented accommodation in Adaminaby but found that we loved the township so much, and its proximity to Selwyn, we made a decision to purchase real estate in the town. There was this cute, two-storey cottage for sale. It was a sturdy, well built, brick and timber dwelling. It was love at first sight! Six months later it was ours. And weren’t we happy! We moved in on boxing day, just over ten years ago. What a magic ten years we have had there! We wanted to be generous, and now rent the cottage out year-round for family holidays. It doesn’t look big from the outside, but has been Council approved for eleven persons. The loft area sleeps six, while downstairs five people can be accommodated in the two bedrooms. Currie’s Alpine Cottage is a comfortable, friendly experience to top off your ski madness day at Selwyn.
